Betty Holland Cox offers a rare firsthand perspective on the creation of the Spirit of Dana Point and the extraordinary journey behind one of California's most iconic tall ships. Alongside her late husband, master shipbuilder Dennis Holland, Betty was part of the team that helped bring the vessel to life and supported its early operation.


From the earliest stages of construction through the ship’s years at sea, she witnessed the vision, craftsmanship, and determination required to build and sustain a traditional tall ship. Her involvement ranged from assisting with charters and serving guests in the galley to helping with the day-to-day operations that kept the ship active and welcoming to the public.


Through personal stories and memories, Betty shares what it was like to be part of the ship’s creation and early voyages, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the people, work, and maritime spirit that shaped its legacy. Her presentation highlights the challenges, adventures, and community that grew around the Spirit of Dana Point.
