Steve is an accomplished plein air artist based in Laguna Beach, California. With a degree in Economics, he spent 40 years in marketing and advertising before returning to his passion for painting. He grew up in Southern California and is an avid sailor, scuba diver and outdoorsman. His love of the ocean and adventure has enabled him to explore some of the most spectacular coastlines in the world while also appreciating the amazing coastal scenes only a short drive from his home. He works primarily in oil and paints both on location as well as in the studio with reference photos and studies from his travels.
Two Voyages, One Legacy: The Western Flyer’s Timeless Journey
Sherry Flumerfelt (11:30 – 12:00 PM)
Sherry is the Executive Director of the Western Flyer Organization based out of Monterey, California. She has 25 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit sector, working with coastal communities to advance ocean health and sustainability. Since joining the Western Flyer Foundation as its Executive Director in July 2022, she has guided the organization’s strategic vision, overseeing planning, fundraising, program development, and community outreach to fulfill its mission of merging science and art aboard the iconic Western Flyer. Her talk comes right from the Western Flyer’s most recent travels back up from the Sea of Cortez.

The Sea Shanties Sailors Sung
Anthony Sciola (2:30 – 3:15)
By his own description, Tony was “forced by cruel and unrelenting parents to play the accordion as a child.” Since then, Captain Tony was destined to play sea music. With the band “Three Sheets to the Wind”, they performed at festivals up and down the West Coast. He is an avid sailor, a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain and Navy veteran. Captain Tony brings a wealth of experience to his nautical music and stories of the sea. Young and old will enjoy the captivating choruses that go with each of the songs.
