The History
In 1851, 'AMERICA' made waves by winning the Royal Yacht Squadron's 100 Guinea Cup, a race around the Isle of Wight. The victory was so decisive that Queen Victoria famously inquired, "Who came second?" The reply? "Your majesty… there is no second." The America's Cup was born, named after this remarkable yacht, not the country.
'AMERICA' has a thrilling 95-year history. This black schooner from New York, designed by a brilliant mind who blended Old World theory with New World ingenuity, stunned the world by achieving what many believed was impossible. Its legacy extended beyond racing, serving as a Confederate blockade runner, a Union warship, and even as a training vessel for the Naval Academy. By the time it met its end in 1945, it was one of the most celebrated vessels in the United States. Although the original was lost during World War II, a near-perfect replica was constructed in 1995 at a cost exceeding $6 million.
In 2007, the America's Cup Management (ACM) recognized the importance of 'AMERICA' and offered $500,000 to bring this legendary vessel to Spain for the America's Cup event. 'AMERICA' continued to serve as a symbol of the race's heritage, representing the history of this prestigious event. In 2015 and 2016, it embarked on a grand tour, visiting various locations along the West Coast, Mexico, the U.S. Gulf and East Coasts, and the Caribbean. Join us at the Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival to witness the sheer magnificence of 'AMERICA' and to delve into the remarkable history that has made it a symbol of sailing excellence. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of a living legend's legacy.
